Book Review: Paper Towns by John Green (Spoiler-Free)

Hey everyone!
Paper TownsLast week, I finished reading Paper Towns by John Green and thought it was appropriate to do a review. I really enjoyed this book! The only other book I've read by John Green is The Fault in Our Stars which I did like more than this one. Anyways, this is a spoiler-free review!

"Quentin Jacobsen has spent a lifetime loving the magnificently adventurous Margo Roth Spiegelman from afar. So when she cracks open a window and climbs back into his life—dressed like a ninja and summoning him for an ingenious campaign of revenge—he follows.

After their all-nighter ends and a new day breaks, Q arrives at school to discover that Margo, always an enigma, has now become a mystery. But Q soon learns that there are clues—and they’re for him. Urged down a disconnected path, the closer he gets, the less Q sees of the girl he thought he knew."

Like I said above, I loved this book! John Green's books always make me think, and this one didn't disappoint. I thought Quentin was a great character. I liked Margo, too, just not as much as Quentin, Ben, and Radar. The mystery aspect of this book was very enjoyable as well. I love figuring out the clues the same way the character does. The road trip was very fun and funny as well. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to contemporary readers!

Sorry for the short review, but thanks for reading! -Kait

Book Reviews: The Mara Dyer Series (1&2) by Michelle Hodkin

Hey everyone!
So a few days ago, I finished The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin, the first two books in a trilogy. And I loved them! They were so good. The books had some creepy elements but they were so interesting. I liked the second one more because I thought it was more creepy and exciting, but it did have some cons, too. I'll let you know when spoilers start!

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #1)The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer | Book 1
"Mara Dyer doesn’t think life can get any stranger than waking up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
It can.

She believes there must be more to the accident she can’t remember that killed her friends and left her mysteriously unharmed.
There is.

She doesn’t believe that after everything she’s been through, she can fall in love.
She’s wrong."

In other words, Mara Dyer survived an incident where all her friends were killed and she was fine, even though the whole building collapsed. She's suffering from PTSD and can't remember anything from the incident. And of course, there's more involved than it looks like.
One thing I really liked about this series is Mara. She's an unreliable character, but that's one of the reasons why I like her. We have to figure things out for ourselves instead of the character always doing the solving. She's also sarcastic, which I love because I'm sarcastic myself (which you probably can't tell from just my blog). We have some other characters as well. Like Noah Shaw. At first, I wasn't sure how I was going to like Noah by his reputation and all. But by the end of this book and the second one, I'm so happy Mara met him. Their relationship is pretty funny, which is needed in this book. It was so interesting finding out what the heck happened. Overall, I loved this book.

The Evolution of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #2)
The Evolution of Mara Dyer | Book 2
"Mara Dyer once believed she could run from her past.

She can’t.

She used to think her problems were all in her head.

They aren’t.

She couldn’t imagine that after everything she’s been through, the boy she loves would still be keeping secrets.

She’s wrong.

In this gripping sequel to The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, the truth evolves and choices prove deadly. What will become of Mara Dyer next?"

This book. I was so paranoid while reading this. When my door opened from the wind, I jumped. When I woke up in the middle of the night, I thought someone was watching me sleep (which makes more sense if you read this book). One reason why I loved this more than the first one is because it was creepy. I heard things about the first book being creepy, but this one made me change position while reading so I can see my whole room. The new antagonist in this book is now an actual person which makes things so interesting. One thing that bothered me (not because it was a bad writing choice- it just made me angry with Mara. I thought it made perfect sense and all, but if I was in her position... glad to have Noah! But her family doesn't believe anything! I was like yelling at my book. Now I'm just going to get in spoilers because I have something (more like someone, or someones if that's grammatically correct) on my mind. Okay? Okay.

SPOILERS:DON'T READ IF HAVEN'T READ. WHICH MEANS: GO READ!

Book Review: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Hey everyone!
So today I have a short book review on a great book! I heard a lot of great things about The Book Thief, which is what we're discussing today, and I thought I should get it. This will be a spoiler-free review, except let me say one thing: the ending made me cry. Anyways, here's the synopsis from Goodreads:
The Book Thief"It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.By her brother's graveside, Liesel Meminger's life is changed when she picks up a single object, partially hidden in the snow. It is The Grave Digger's Handbook, left there by accident, and it is her first act of book thievery. So begins a love affair with books and words, as Liesel, with the help of her accordion-playing foster father, learns to read. Soon she is stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, the mayor's wife's library, wherever there are books to be found.

But these are dangerous times. When Liesel's foster family hides a Jew in their basement, Liesel's world is both opened up and closed down.

In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time."

First of all, I heard amazing things about this book, and don't get me wrong- I did love this book, yet I was expecting something to amaze me. Unfortunately, I didn't get exactly what I was looking for, but I still loved this book. One thing that I liked what the unique narrator. This book is narrated by Death. How cool? Secondly, I loved the characters. Every one we ran into I liked, even if their personality's themselves weren't wonderful. My favorites have to be Liesel, Rudy, Hans, and Max. They were just likable and well-developed. The writing was really nice, too. It was simple, but there were so many metaphors and similes, and very creative ones, for that matter. But the ending. It wasn't like it was bad or anything, it was just so sad. So heads up! I really enjoyed this book, and I would still give it a 5/5 stars. I thought everything was great, but I heard that this a book, that NY Times says on the cover, is "Life changing". Anyways, thanks for reading! -Kait

Book Review: Crewel by Gennifer Albin

Hey everyone!
Today I will be reviewing Crewel by Gennifer Albin. This book review will be spoiler free! I finally got around to reading this book and I really enjoyed it. I would probably rate it at 4.5/5. "

Crewel (Crewel World, #1)"Enter a tangled world of secrets and intrigue where a girl is in charge of other’s destinies, but not her own.

Sixteen-year-old Adelice Lewys has always been special. When her parents discover her gift—the ability to weave the very fabric of reality—they train her to hide it. For good reason, they don’t want her to become a Spinster — one of the elite, beautiful, and deadly women who determine what people eat, where they live, how many children they have, and even when they die.

Thrust into the opulent Western Coventry, Adelice will be tried, tested and tempted as she navigates the deadly politics at play behind its walls. Now caught in a web of lies and forbidden romance, she must unravel the sinister truth behind her own unspeakable power. Her world is hanging by a thread, and Adelice, alone, can decide to save it — or destroy it."

I don't normally talk about the presentation of the book, but I absolutely adore this book cover. But also what's inside I really liked too. I thought the world that the main character lived in was so fascinating and very different from all the other dystopian worlds I've read. The idea that the whole world they lived in was weaved and can be manipulated at the touch of the Spinters and Creweler was so intriguing. The characters were also great to read about. I especially loved our main character Adelice. She was strong, but not in a Katniss type way. I feel like she, in some ways, is similar to Cassia from Matched. They both have that secret rebellious touch, and are strong, but like I already said, in a non-Katniss way. The other characters were also very interesting; for instance, Maela, Enora, and Loricel. The whole idea of wiping a strand "clean" or "removing" it really also represents the dystopian aspect into this world. At first I was going to rate it 4 stars, but then at the end I decided to rate it 4.5 stars. I saw the end coming, but I so excited to see where the next book goes. This book, in my opinion, is definitely worth reading! -Kait
